Savitri is divided into 12 books and 49 cantos in total.
The dawn here related to the vedic godess of dawn Usha. Dawn here symbolises continuity of the process of Time. It is in effect a time eternity in contrast to timeless eternity of the absolute. The night that reigns before the dawn is the night of nescience that reigned before the cosmos was created.
It was the hour before the gods awake. The universe as we know was not created. All was nescience and manifestation was not. Then something undefinable stirs the depth of the nescience. As a result, repeating her unconscious act she brings into existence the vast material universe.
A nameless movement, an unthought idea teased the inconscient to wake ignorance. A subconscious memory is stirred in the mind of night. When memory returned to her she realized that it was not the first of the dawns that was awakening in her. She realized that there was some thing that wished but knew not how to be.
There lurked in her an unremembering entity that was a survivor of a slain and a buried past.
There was an outbreak of a light. It was a scout in a reconnaissance from the sun to seek for a soul sole and desolate. The light called upon night to take upon an adventure of consciousness and joy.
The birth of this infant aspiration converts unwitting and sleeping night from a careless mother into a careful mother of the universe. It is the persistent thrill of a transfiguring touch of the divine form above that persuades the inert black quietitude to manifest beauty and wonder.
Everything now seems ready for the outbreak of dawn. She is a message from the unknown immortal light.
For a short while the full glory of the divinity is manifested. It is almost the precursor of her descent on earth as Savitri.
The divine afflatus spent withdrew. The divine power left behind her a sacred yearning lingering in its trace and devotion for her. The seeds of her presence would grow with the passage of time.
Savitri the princess also awoke with the rest of the mankind.
Her heart was full of anguish of the gods. She wanted to break free of the limits of humanity that held her in captivity. She had divine love for all, a universal sympathy that went out constantly to help other men. She gave herself freely to men in an act of inner sympathy that heaven might native grow on human soil.
Humanity is intolerant of divinity in its natural state.
Savitri thus had a full share of her sorrow and her struggle. She did not allow her inner struggle to be seen outside
The poet then traces the growth of Savitri from childhood and she becomes sensitive to human suffering. She is later seen confronting time and fate.
This was the day when satyavan must die.
